Ratnagiri Buddhist Places

Ratnagiri is another pilgrimage related to Buddhism, near Udaigiri and Lalitgiri Buddgist destinations and has many significant Buddhist sculptures scattered around in the hill range. The excavations have revealed the relation of this place with the Gupta Dynasty, and this dates back to 6th Century AD.

In the beginning, this was an important centre of Mahayana form of Buddhism. During the 8th-9th century A.D., this became a great centre of Tantric Buddhism or Vajrayana art and philosophy. Pag Sam Jon Zang, a Tibetan source, indicates that the institution at Ratnagiri played a significant role in the emergence of Kalachakratantra during the 10th century A.D. This is quite evident from the numerous votive stupas with reliefs of divinities of the Vajrayana pantheon. Stupas, motifs and monasteries are the prominent places to visit in Ratnagiri. The Ratnagiri Buddhist monastery displays 24 cells, a large courtyard, a Shrine in the front a lobby etc. The Motifs present here in Ratnagiri Buddhist heritage site are referred as Kunjalata and Patralata in Odia describes about the cultural process transfer and adoption of stuffs from Buddhism in Odisha.
