Kuruma Buddhist Places

The ancient Buddhist monuments in Kuruma are situated 8 kms to the south-east of the famous Sun Temple at Konark in the district of Puri. The site was constructed in the 9th - 10th centuries A.D and is believed to have been a Kuruma Buddhist monastery. On the top portion of the very site there is a modern temple which houses three Buddhist images viz. crowned Buddha seated in Bhumisparsa mudra, Padmapani Avalokitesvara and Revanta. These three images are jointly worshipped as 'Yamadharma' by local inhabitants.

Here Buddha is seated cross-legged with right hand in Bhumisparsa mudra while the left hand placed over the left knee and the Avalokitesvara image is seated on a lotus. Kuruma is an interesting site representing ancient Odisha's architecture, history, religion and culture. The place gained fame after excavations were carried out in this small hamlet from 1971 to 1975.

Bhubaneswar is the nearest airport to Kuruma Buddhist site and railway station and Bhubaneswar to Konark is 61 km by road.
